Chapter 3

“Yes, he is one of them. Keisha, he has changed. We found him half dead, attacked by his own kind. They said he was a disgrace to them.” Kao suddenly appeared behind Qin. Qin looked down onto the floor with what seemed to be embarrassment of his past. I took a couple steps away from Qin as Kao took a couple steps forward. He could be one too, I thought to myself. I had to protect myself. At that instant, a semi transparent shield seemed to form before my eyes. I touched the shield with curiosity, so did Kao. The effects on us were very different. The moment Kao laid a finger on the shield; he was shocked by a strong electric current whereas I just felt a tingle coursing through me.

“Keisha, it seems that I have underestimated your ability.” Qin said as he helped Kao up. Kao seemed a little bruised up from the incident. As I let my guard down, the shield shimmered and slowly faded away. I rushed over to Kao and gently placed my hand on his heart. A tingling sensation ran across my hand as a soft light was seen on the place my palm touched his body. I closed my eyes as to concentrate as I started to heal Kao. When I opened my eyes, Kao was already looking better but still a little worn out from the shock before.

“You are a special Healer. Not only do you have the gift of healing, but you have the gift of absorbing. I suppose your parents were part of the community too?” Kao said with a wheezy voice. I frowned in disapproval. I did not recall seeing them ever using their powers. Actually, I still can’t remember much about them. Everything is still very vague to me. I shook my head.

“I have absolutely no idea. I don’t remember ever seeing them possess powers of sorts.”

“Well, you currently possess the power of a Healer and Defender. How your power evolves strictly depends on how well you can gain control of it.” I nodded. Did I just subconsciously create an electrical shield around me? My gaze landed on Kao’s right hand. It was the hand he had used to touch the shield. The skin was healing but a scar remained. As far as my healing power went, I have yet to discover the full potential of it.

“Let’s get him to some place to rest.” I said as we supported Kao and slowly made out way to the village which was hidden in the centre of the forest. I stifled my laugh as I thought about how cliché this was. A village hidden in the centre of the forest could go by unnoticed for such a long period of time. Qin shot me a look and I quickly recomposed myself. The villager’s stares pierced through me as we walked through them with Kao walking limply supported by us.

“Keisha,” he managed to cough out as we gently laid him onto the bed. “You have been gifted with the power of a defender also known as the power of lightning. There’ll be more to come than just a protective shield,” was all he managed to say to me before he passed out. Qin led me out of the room and gently shut the door behind him. I was then brought into another room; it was much smaller than the previous one. Qin sat down on the floor and motioned me to do the same. I slowly lowered myself down and I found my head spinning once again.

Qin caught me as I fell. My body started to shiver slightly in his arms. They were cold but yet as soft as a newborn baby’s skin. Despite the coldness I was feeling, sweat begin to trickle down my forehead. Darkness started to take over my sight. I couldn’t see Qin’s face anymore. I could only hear his soothing whispers telling me I’ll be alright soon. For the first time, I fell into a stranger’s embrace.
